AISI 420 stainless steel is an alloy of iron, further classified as a martensitic stainless steel. 420 is the AISI designation for this material. 1.4021 is the EN numeric designation. X20Cr13 is the EN chemical designation. S42000 is the UNS number. Additionally, the British Standard (BS) designation is 420S29.
AISI Grade 420 stainless steel is a higher carbon version of 410. 420 stainless steel bars can be hardened by heat treatment and they contains a minimum of 12 per cent chromium, just sufficient to give corrosion resistance properties.
It has good ductility in the annealed condition but is capable of being hardened up to Rockwell Hardness 50HRC, the highest hardness of the 12 per cent chromium grades. Its best corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and surface ground or polished.
420 stainless steel is most commonly used to resist corrosive environments such as fresh water, alkaline materials, mild acids, food & organic compounds as well as air.

By using 1.4021(ASTM 420 – SS2303) you get a stainless and hardenable steel with high tensile strength and good corrosion resistance. The steel has good machinability and is used for e.g. shafts, spindles, pump parts and nuts.
The steel grade 1.4021(also called ASTM 420 and SS2303) is a high tensile strength martensitic stainless steel with good corrosion properties. The steel is machinable and suits good for production of details with good resistance to e.g. air water steam, freshwater, certain alkaline solutions and other mildly aggressive chemicals. It shall not be used in marine or in chloride environment. The steel is magnetic and in the quenched and tempered condition.
Some typical application areas for EN 1.4021:
Weldable steel for for machining
1.4021 is possible to weld and shall be welded with welding consumables similar to that of the parent one. The steel is generally easier to machine than ”conventional” austenitic steels. The heat treatment condition of 1.4021 is QT 700 and it should be hot formed in the temperature range 1100-800°C. Slow cooling after hot forming.
Steel grade 1.4021 is available as machined round bar in the dimensions 16 – 160 mm.
